The Blind Watch Maker, Richard Dawkins – Best Science Documentary Award 1987

Produced in 1987 by Jeremy Taylor and Richard Dawkins for BBC’s HORIZON series. It was based on his book of the same name, and won the Sci-Tech Award for Best Science Documentary of the year.
Description from the BBC’s education catalogue: “…The evidence proposed is well-organized and current. The video first presents creationist ideas, articulated by Texans who support the theory of special creationism, and then provides vivid contradictory data through observation, computer simulations, robotics, experiments and close examination of designs in nature. Its central argument is that the diversity and variety we see in such complex adaptations as the eye and insect mimicry can best be explained by cumulative natural selection over long periods of time. With its vivid blend of argument and scientific detail, The Blind Watchmaker will enrich even the most advanced student’s view of evolution.”
As much as I resent the predominance of Richard Dawkins’ philosophical stupidity on British television these days, there is plenty to learn from this nice little documentary. I do not consider myself creationist nor a Darwinist: I think this dogmatic polarisation of views on the subject of evolution/creation is absurd. It makes me laugh when people level similar arguments against creationism against intelligent design theory: the two couldn’t be further apart and – as is often the case – the problem lies, I think, in the definition of terms (read anything by Dawkins to see these semiological conundrums take place with astonishing regularity and brazen absurdity): in this particular case, ironically, the term ‘intelligence’. Anyway, enough of me. Listen to Richard. He knows everything. Be warned: if you dare express an opinion to the contrary of ‘rational, intelligent thought’ – as prescribed by his, in my opinion, illogical and unscientific nihilism – he will get arsey. But don’t worry, he’ll never hit you. He went to Oxford. That sort of thing is frowned upon here. Apparently it shows weakness of character.
