“Over 2,500 years ago, one man showed the world a way to enlightenment. This beautifully produced Buddhist film meticulously reveals the fascinating story of Prince Siddhartha and the spiritual transformation that turned him into the Buddha.”

My personal choice of orthodox spiritual paths, if I had to take one. I sincerely recommend reading any Christmas Humphrey, any Buddhist koan (meditations) compilations/teachings (such as Basho and I can’t remember the other famous ones: any comments?), and Willem Van De Vetering’s The Empty Mirror.

Not a radical film as such (typical BBC docu-drama pap, really) but a subject that is a radical concept: higher psychology as religion.

A few Koans for you to contemplate in your spare time

I don’t support anyone or anything unless I think it is going to assist the world’s poor, hinder the world arms trade, expose liars and corrupt politicians and despots, promote peace and creative harmony among the world’s people. This post is in support of Naomi Klein’s critically acclaimed new book “The Shock Doctrine (The Rise Of Disaster Capitalism)”. Ignore the glitzy marketing, think of the information and the new generations that will gain access to it because of it -Ed.

“When I finished The Shock Doctrine, I sent it to Alfonso Cuarón because I adore his films and felt that the future he created for Children of Men was very close to the present I was seeing in disaster zones. I was hoping he would send me a quote for the book jacket and instead he pulled together this amazing team of artists — including Jonás Cuarón who directed and edited — to make The Shock Doctrine short film. It was one of those blessed projects where everything felt fated.” – Naomi Klein

Before it got cut down to 24mins (and even less), this was the full interview. I’ve not seen the cut down versions but having co-produced a documentary and assisted with the interview of a controversial political character myself, I have to say editing is often a dirty business. Sometimes even with the best intentions.

Part four is missing. I’ll keep an eye out for it but this still makes for masterclass viewing in American media propaganda. Ahmadinejad is no angel but he comes across incredibly well in this interview, despite all efforts to the contrary of a little known interviewer (would no one else step up to the plate?).

Rageh Omaar embarks on a unique journey inside what he describes as one of the most misunderstood countries in the world, looking at the country through the eyes of people rarely heard – ordinary Iranians.

It took a year of wrangling to get permission to film inside Iran but the result is an amazing portrayal of an energetic and vibrant country that is completely different to the usual images seen in the media.
